Ladakh
Ladakh is situated at the highest Tibetan Plateau in India at the altitude of more than 3000 meters. Geographically, it extends from Siachen Glacier in the Karakorum Range to the north and to the Great Himalayan Range to the south. The eastern end is an uninhabited Aksai Chin region claimed by India but controlled by China.
The Khampas were the earliest settlers from Eastern Tibet, but the land changed hands between the Muslims and the Buddhists. Ladakh was ruled mostly by Muslims who destroyed the Buddhist Temples and artifacts. Islam took its roots in the early 17th Century and mosques were built but in the late 17th century Ladhak was invaded by by Tibet and was annexed.
