Makalu Expedition

Overview

Mount Malaku: the fifth highest mountain in the world. The peak was first mapped and photographed from the Tibetan side by the 1921 British Everest reconnaissance. The first attempt on Makalu was made in 1954 by a United States team, who trekked all the way from the Indian border near Biratnagar. At the same time, a New Zealand expedition including Edmund Hillary approached the mountain, but turned back very early on due to illness and injury. In 1954, a French team attempted to climb the mountain, but was unsuccessful. The first successful ascents were made by three teams of French climbers on successive days in the spring of 1955. The Japanese climbed mount Makalu in 1970, another French team climbed it in 1971 and a Yugoslav expedition reached the summit in 1975.

Makalu West Face
It took seven failed attempts to yield one successful attempt at summiting via the West Face. The West Face was first successfully scaled on May 21, 1997 by a Russian expedition via the most difficult route, led by Sergey Efimov. This led to Alexei Bolotov, Yuri Ermachek, Dmitri Pavlenko, Igor Bugachevski and Nikolai Jiline summiting. The expedition was awarded the Piolet d’Or, or the “Gold Ice-Axe”, for this achievement.

The Route
The route is composed of four main parts. The first part of the route starts at the base of the West Face (5800m) and climbs to the hanging ice-fall (6100m) to the right of the ice-fall. The second part extends at a 45 degree angle from the plateau above the ice-fall (4500m). Following this is an ice-rock wall that is at a 55 degree angle and extends to a height of 7400m. The final section begins with 70 to 75 degree rock pillar, which leads to the west ridge at 8,000 meters height through to the top of the summit.

Ropes are typically fixed from 5800m to 6100m and from 6500 m to 7500m. There are high camps established by the Russian Team at these locations.

The French Route on the West Pillar is an aesthetically stunning line that has been seldom attempted. It is an exceedingly difficult steep pillar that was first successfully ascended in 1971. The crux of the line comes at approximately 7,600m in the area of the Seignior Wall.

Day 04: Fly to Tumlingtar

Then we fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and camp there or go in lodge.

Day 05: Tumlingtar to Kuwapani

Then we trek from Tumlingtar to Kuwapani and camp there.

Day 06: Kuwapani to Chichila

Then we trek from Kuwapani to Chichila and camp there.

Day 07: Chichila to Num

Then we trek from Chichila to Num and camp there.

Day 08: Num to Seduwa

Then we trek from Num to Seduwa and camp there.

Day 09: Seduwa to Tashigaun

Then we trek from Seduwa to Tashigaun and camp there.

Day 10: Tashigaun to Khongma La (Danda)

Then we trek from Tashigaun to Khongma La (Danda) and camp there.

Day 11: Khongma La (Danda) to Mumfuk

Then we trek from Khongma La (Danda) to Mumfuk and camp there.

Day 12: Mumfuk to Yangle Kharak

Then we trek from Mumfuk to Yangle Kharak and camp there.

Day 13: Yangle Khark to Merak

Then we trek from Yangle Kharak to Merak and camp there.

Day 14: Merak to Sersung

Then we trek from Merak toSersung and camp there. Then half day rest for a acclimatization.

Day 15: Sersung to Makalu Base camp

Then we trek from Sersung to Makalu Base camp and camp there.

Day 16-47: Climbing Period for Makalu (8463 m)

In this time period we will climb the mountain

Day 48: Makalu Base Camp to Mumbuck

Then we will trek back to mumbuck from Makalu base camp and camp there.

Day 49: Mumbuck to Khongma La (Danda)

Then we will trek back from mumbuck to Khongma La (Danda) and camp there.

Day 50: Khongma La to Seduwa

Then we will trek back from Khongma La (Danda) to Seduwa and camp there.

Day 51: Seduwa to Chichila

Then we will trek back from Seduwa to Chichila and camp there.

Day 52: Chichila to Tumlingtar

Then we will trek back from Chichila to Tumlingtar and camp there.

Day 53: Tumlingtar to Kathmandu

Then we will flight back to Kathmandu and overnight at hotel.

Day 54: Free day in Kathmandu

You can roam around Kathmandu valley or you can do shopping.

Day 55: Departure

After breakfast we will transfer you to Tribhuvan International airport (TIA) three hour before your flight you have to reach there.
