We leave Kathmandu early in the morning, driving for 127 km (approx 5 hrs) through the beautiful Nepalese countryside to Kodari on the Nepal – Tibet border. After completing the border formalities at both the Nepalese and Chinese immigration posts we drive up 8 km (approx ½ hrs) a series of incredibly steep switchbacks to Zhangmu on the Tibetan side of the border. A short drive of only 38km (approx 1 hrs) from the border takes us to Nyalam, on a steep winding road which passes through a mossy gully with cascading waterfalls. Overnight at hotel.
Day 02: Rest day in Nyalam: 3750 m
We spend a rest day in Nyalam today in order to acclimatize before heading up higher. After breakfast walk nearby village. Overnight at hotel
Day 03: Drive to Saga: (4640 m) 240 km 5 – 6 hrs
Today we drive approx 5-6 hrs (240 km) to the huge lake called Peiku-tso crossing two high passes. After a picnic lunch at bank of Peiku-tso Lake we continue drive to Saga crossing the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River) on a ferry. Overnight at hotel.
Day 04: Drive to Manasarovar: (4590 m) 480 km 8 – 9 hrs
A longer day’s drive today, 480 km approx 8-9 hrs From Saga, we set out across the plains to Manasarovar located just 30 km south of Mt Kailash. The lake is separated from another lake, Rakshas Tal, myth has it here Ravana prayed and had the audience with Shiva. Overnight at hotel
Day 05: Drive to Darchen: (4575 m) 115 km 2 hrs
After Breakfast walk around Lake Manasarovar then we drive for about 115 km towards Darchen, the Base Camp of Kailash where we stay at Guest house. Overnight at hotel.
**Note: Interested visitor can do Manasarovar Kora by Environmental Protection Bus run by local authority. Interested clients have to buy ticket day before with the help of Guide (approx: US$ 50 per person).
Day 06: Drive to Tarboche, Witness Saga Dawa Festival and back to Darchen: (4860 m) 13 km drive – 20 min
Early morning drive about 13 km to Tarboche, Witness Saga Dawa Festival then back to Darchen.The highlight of the festival is rising of the Tarboche prayer pole on the morning. The old prayer flagpole is taken down and the new one is put up. The prayer flagpole is a tall pole from which are hung hundreds of multicolored prayer flags. Each prayer flag represents a prayer that someone wants fulfilled. The flags are let to fly in the air so as to increase the potential for answering.
After pole is raised, monks circumambulate the prayer pole in elaborate costumes and blow horns. In the afternoon some sets of on their Kora and some go back to Darchen to prepare for their next day Kora Overnight at hotel
Day 07: Trek to Dira Puk: (4860 m) 13 km drive – 20 min, 7 km Trek 5 – 6 hrs
Drive 13 km to Tarboche, this is the starting point for our Kora, the 35 km trek around the mountain. From Tarboche, we walk up the Lha Chu Valley through beautiful green meadows and streams with Mt Kailash towering above us. Those who do want wish to trek around Kailash can go back to Manasarovar or Darchen and wait for the Kora group to return. Overnight at hotel
Day 08: Trek to Zutul Puk: (4760 m) 18 km Trek 9 – 10 hrs
We now leave the Lha Chu Valley and enter the Dolma Chu Valley, heading up towards a high pass, the Dolma La (5650m). It’s a tough climb to the summit which is festooned with prayer flags but from there it is all downhill or flat to Zutul-puk. Overnight at hotel.
Day 09: Trek to Darchen and drive to Manasarovar: (4590 m) 10 km Trek 4 – 5 hrs, 115 km drive 2 hrs
On the final day of the Kora we cross several streams. We then enter the Bharka plain and it’s about an hour’s walk through this desert-like landscape to Darchen. We board the car waiting at Darchen and drive approx 2 hrs to Manasarovar for overnight halt. Overnight at Guest House.
Day 10: Drive to Saga: (4640 m) 480 km 8 – 9 hrs
We continue driving today along a 480 km stretch of road to Saga. Overnight at hotel.
Day 11: Drive to Nyalam: (3750 m) 240 km 5 – 6 hrs
We have to drive south, crossing 240 km, along the Friendship Highway. The trail winds through a high pass, the Lalung La (5100m). Further on, we journey through breathtaking views, alpine meadow trails, picturesque hamlets and an abundance of wildflowers. En route, we get to see several Nepalese and Indian pilgrims. As we drive through a mossy gorge of waterfalls and cascades, we finally enter Nyalam at 3750 meter. Overnight in hotel.
Day 12: Nyalam – Zhangmu (2300 m) – Kathmandu (1300 m) 173 km 6 – 7 hrs
After breakfast drive for one hour (38 km) to the lush and verdant vegetation of Zhangmu. Further few kilometres drive follows Friendship Bridge along Bhote Koshi River to Immigration Control in Khasa Port where you part with your Tibetan guide and driver. After immigration formality we cross the Friendship Bridge and walk for 5 to 10 minutes to Nepal Immigration and process for re-entry formalities to return to Kathmandu approx 4 hours (127 km).
