Upper Dolpo Trek 27-28 Days Camping trek
This is the ultimate trek in the wilderness unlike any others. The mighty peaks in the south-east stand as the cloud barriers that cause a semi-arid climate with very less precipitation. The population migrate between villages and high lying summer pastures at 4000-5000 meters with their stock in a lifestyle of farming nomads. The upper Dolpo trek route passes through lush forests, high mountain passes, and hidden valleys, making it a perfect destination for trekkers looking for a unique adventure.
Like Lower Dolpa trek the trip starts with a flight to Nepalgunj and further to Juphal. (A dirt track is also constructed to Juphal which can be a bumpy and a tedious ride). Our trek then head north to Chekpa along the Shuli river into Ringmo village and onto the pristine turquoise Phoksundo lake. The region is very remote, you will find people living their lives as they used to live hundreds of years ago. Upper Dolpo is highly influenced by Tibetan culture and tradition. The lifestyle, language, dishes, festivals, and beliefs of locals are the same as Tibetans.
From here we venture through the pure Himalayan wilderness crossing several passes with plenty of opportunities to see Blue Sheep and may be a Snow Leopard. Along the Phoksundo River the first in the series is the Nangdalo pass 4460 meters to Shey Gompa. Shey Monastery at 4200 meters built in 11 century is the spiritual heart of Upper Dolpo. Then we head along to cross Gela Pass at 5094 to Namgong and to Saldang. A visit from here to Yanger Gompa would be stimulating. We cross Khoma pass at 4460 meters to Shimegaon. We retrace our steps to Dho Tarap through a series of yak pastures and sparse summer settlements. And from Dho Tarap we follow Tarap Khola to Nawapani and further to Juphal for the flight out.
