Bhutan Festival Tours
A Tsechu is a Buddhist festival to honour Buddhist Saint Padmasambhava, popularly known as ‘Guru Rimpoche’, the saint who was responsible for introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. The Tsechu draws hundreds of Bhutanese people in a spirit of reverence, blessing, festivity and celebration, and is one of the best ways to discover the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan. The Tsechu comes to life with colour, music, dance and drama as villagers and townspeople gather to witness the masked dances, sword dances and other sacred rituals. These events, most of which are performed by monks in colourful and elaborate costumes bring blessings to the onlookers, as well as instructing them about the Buddhist Dharma. Annual festivals (Tsechus and Dromchoes) are spiritual occasions in each district.
The Dzongs, fortresses built in every district during the Middle Ages, function as the centre of both religious and secular activities, where the district monk body practices their faith. The dzongs remain closed most of the time to preserve the kingdom's religious environment, and are open to visitors only during festival time. Chortens (Stupas) are common throughout the kingdom and they ward off evil spirits and protect from imminent danger. They represent the mind of Buddha symbolically and remind people of the possibility and the path of enlightenment.
Even more common are the prayer flags strung across mountain slopes, bridges, and high passes. Transmitting prayers to the Gods and keeping up a constant communication with the heavens, prayer flags fluttering in the wind are a simple reminder of the clarity of the Buddhist faith. There are various Tsechus held all year around at temples, Dzongs and monasteries throughout Bhutan of which Thimpu, Paro and Bhumthang are most prominent. The festival days are based on the Tibetan Lunar calendar, thus does not fall on the same date every year. The tours will be based on the festival dates
The festivals basically last for a day or two only. A 4/5 days tailor made itineraries are the best option. Bhutan is accessible from Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok and Dubai.
